"Portraits for the Homefront" Documentary Screening

Join WQED producer David Solomon for a screening and discussion of his PBS documentary Portraits for the Homefront: The Story of Elizabeth Black. 

Elizabeth Black was a Pittsburgh artist noted for her portrait work of notable families, including the Mellons, Craigs and Shaws. However, she abandoned that career to support American Red Cross efforts during World War 2. Miss Black created a unique goodwill project in which she sketched the faces of soldiers in European field camps and sent the beautiful portraits home to worried families in the United States. Seventy years later, Black’s son uncovered her fascinating memorabilia and shared it with WQED. 

Producer David Solomon’s memorable Emmy-winning documentary explores Black’s lost art career and seeks out elderly veterans who encountered Miss Black on the battlefield.
